International symposium explores future of global urban design

The world is getting smaller, but cities are getting bigger. That growth represents a key challenge and a key opportunity for 21st-century sustainability. In November, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts will present “URBANISM(S): Sustainable Cities for One Planet,” an international symposium exploring the future of global urban design. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne is keynote speaker.

Video: Marsalis visits WUSTL’s 560 Music Center

It’s not every day you get to play with the greats. On Oct. 20, famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra — arguably the nation’s finest jazz big band — joined the St. Louis Symphony for a performance of Marsalis’ “Swing Symphony.” The day before, Marsalis and company visited WUSTL’s 560 Music Center to conduct a clinic with students from the East St. Louis High School Jazz Band.

Trustees grant faculty promotions, tenure

At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, faculty members were appointed with tenure, promoted with tenure or granted tenure. The appointments became effective immediately.

Scary – but safe – fun on the South 40

Safe Trick or Treat was held Oct. 27 on the South 40 for more than 260 children. Offered by the Campus Y and co-sponsored by Student Union and Congress of the South 40, the event offers a safe alternative to Halloween trick-or-treating.

Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights celebration, will be held Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, at Edison Theatre. One of the largest student productions on campus, the event features dances from multiple genres choreographed by the South Asian Student Association.

Men’s soccer team defeats Rochester, Case Western

The men’s soccer team kept its University Athletic Association title hopes alive with road wins over the weekend, defeating Rochester and Case Western Reserve universities. The Bears host University of Chicago for senior day at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Francis Field.
